TODAY

On the minds of all of us at this time is the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. Much attention has been given to the impact in the city of New Orleans. The catastrophic loss of life and property, and a once vibrant city.

All along the Gulf Coast many smaller communities, some similar in size to our own beloved Edmonds, have literally been obliterated. The loss of life and property is horrendous. Along with these obvious losses is the severe wound this section of out nation took. No longer are there communities there, reflecting what we like to call 'our American way of Life" .... no churches, no schools, no commercial activity, no parks or recreation, no celebrations or festivals, no music, and of course, no SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, such as Kiwanis! It is our sincere hope that, with the help of the rest of us, someday this treasured part of our country will rejoin us.

Meanwhile, we watch TV and the futility of it all. I am thankful my family is safe, for now. I was in Florida about six months after the 1994 Hurricane. The outer banks of Pensacola took a bad hit then and 6 months after there was still a lot of debris, and badly damaged housing, beaches almost cleared of sand, which the hurricane had deposited in streets, yards, basements, roads. Last year they had moved out to Gulf Breeze, on the outer banks and they lost a tree, some lights, but nothing irreplaceable. My son's wife is an outside plant engineer for Bell South, so she was required to stay on the mainland until it was over. The hotel they were at had cement walls, and they buckled in the wind, but didn't collapse. In the confusion they did not leave their car windows ajar, and all the car windows had imploded. I talked to him a week. He said they felt so fortunate and were terribly worried about the people in the Gulf area. They have talked about moving away, but until their kids are out of college don't feel they can afford to move.

With the new school year fast approaching, four club members, Mary Lou Kantor, Dorothea Forrest, Jim Buchanan and Elwin Wright, met briefly Friday morning, August 19, with new Meadowdale High School Principal, Dale Cote. (Pronounced Cotee).

The group welcomed Mr. Cote to our community and gave a quick outline of our Kiwanis role with our sponsorship of Key Club at Meadowdale. We were also pleased to welcome back Elizabeth Cano to again serve as Key Club Faculty Advisor.

Both Mr. Cote and Mrs. Cano expressed strong support for an active and involved Key Club this year.

Jim Buchanan indicated that we (Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis) would welcome Principal Cote as a guest speaker at one of our future meetings..... to keep us updated on activity at Meadowdale

President’s Corner

It is now the last month of my "reign" and I am ready to turn the job over to John Rutter. I enjoyed some parts of this job more than others, but I will admit I enjoyed it for the most part.

This year we changed from a single program chairman to six individual captains with all members belonging to one of the six teams. Each team is responsible for 2 months and as this got everyone involved, we have had some excellent programs. We are going to continue this system for the next year, so start thinking of a program or two for your month.

I would like to thank all the people who helped me run the club this past year - Shirley who actually kept the club running smoothly, Don with inter-clubs, Billy Joe handling the money, Paul who helped bring the berries for delivery, Ray Olson who got us the extra money setting up chairs, Jim who helped get the volunteers for the Taste of Edmonds parking, Harold for finding alternate places for our meeting, all the past presidents who corrected my mistakes while running a meeting and everyone else who helped but whose name escapes me.

That was one of the longest one sentence paragraphs I've typed, but I had to thank you all. Now I get to sit back and make sure John runs the meetings correctly!

A truly lovely town. Not quite as big as Edmonds. It's in the heart of the Okanogan, which runs from the U.S. up to and through Vernon. There are a bunch of small towns around there, who all cooperated with each other to take on certain parts of the convention. They have a sort of activities center, and most of their activities were in the curling club, and all of the big luncheons and banquets were in there. Unfortunately, the acoustics were terrible. Again, they let the Key Club and Circle K club each make a speech and each governor talked, and talked, and talked. Remind us to not go to one of those next year. They should have been limited to not more than ten minutes. Other than the O'Keef Ranch, the highlight for me was the Drudge Band at the Governor's Banquet. It was great!

Pacific Northwest District

Notes on the August Convention

Larry Merwin, Lt Gov. Div 22

Steve Emhoff was installed as our next Governor, and Lori Bryant was unopposed for the position of Governor Elect. Only 195 of our 385 clubs were represented and there were 431 delegates. Larry has already visited most of the clubs to talk about the convention business. Other goals for members are to:

> Increase our commitment to serve the Children within our communities both locally and globally.

> Each club perform a Young Children Priority One service project.

>Work with the T.A.G. (Together Achieving Growth) within our district, in order to increase and retain membership in order to maximize service potential) within our communities.

>Sponsor a youth to a Burn Camp within the Pacific Northwest.

>Make Kiwanis known to the community.

>Everyday hero awards o a monthly basis.

>Provide continuing education for all members.

>Each club must participate in the Governor's Project

Officer Installation in October

On October 18, John Rutter will be installed as our President, and Ben Snowdon as President elect. Harold Huston will be vice-President. We will install four Board members; John Nutting, George Bardsley, Elwin Wright, and Clayne Leitner. Also installed will be Shirley Elliot and Billy Joe Roberts. The installation is in the private dining room at Barlees restaurant, and starts at 9:30. We also can order breakfast.

New Money Raising Project Proposed

At the last Seniors Board meeting, we agreed to look into providing an Edmonds artist calendar promotion. Before we actually spend any money on it, we are combing all avenues to make sure we get the most economical and efficient way to have an excellent product. If it isn't feasible, we will not proceed.
We will be working on our bike helmet project soon, and the third grader dictionary project soon, too.
We need to increase our income!
