CURRENT EVENTS

1. Aquasox Baseball—  Following a presentation by Everett Aquasox spokesperson, Jason Jarret, real interest was expressed by several Kiwanis Club members in attending a game as a group for some fun and recreation. The club has attended this way in the past with a good time reported. An afternoon game was chosen on July 28. Our goal is to have at least 20 folks coming out for the game. Mark your calendars for the matinee game on July 28. Invite friends, family, it doesn’t have to be a Kiwanis member. We need at least 20 to attend. There are a variation of choices, which will be discussed at the meeting.

2. Six of us from Edmonds Seniors wrapped up our second session with graduating Meadowdale High School Seniors on Friday, May 28. We were part of a group of over 100 volunteers that served as panelists in helping to evaluate “Portfolio Presentations” of some 170 potential graduates. This is a district and State mandated exercise for high school seniors. We all expressed that we found it an interesting and revealing experience. Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis involved were Elaine Hinze, Homer Cardle, Shirley Elliot, George Bardsley, Dorothea Forrest and Elwin Wright.  In February, John Rutter served as a panelist when the first half of the senior class was evaluated.

At the early morning meeting on May 27, Meadowdale High Key Club president, Allison Stevens, brought the 20 or so members present up to date on what is and is not about to happen.  Not happening, . . at  least for this Spring, is a suggested “Pie in the Face” club fund raiser. With other events crowding their calendar, it was decided to defer this project until next school year. Mentioned was the probability of another Car Wash for later in the Summer. Last year’s Car Wash was very successful so a repeat performance is expected.

The Taste of Edmonds, held in August, is an annual Key Club project, assisting Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis in operating a ticket gate at the three day event. A special meeting is being called for June 3 to finalize participation in these two events before the school year ends, June 22.

  President’s Corner

Busy.. Busy. . Gearing up for our “getaway” to the North for a few weeks. We may even have an opportunity to pay a visit to a far flung Kiwanis Club—not sure at this point, e-mails have been sent and we’re waiting for answers. We are hoping to arrange a liaison between a Kiwanis Club in Anchorage and a member of the Bainbridge Club we recently visited. Roy Peratrovich, Jr. has designed a sculpture for the small, downtown park in Anchorage, dedicated to his parents. Upon completion he would like to have an Anchorage Kiwanis Club take charge of maintaining it. Such a beautifully planned addition deserves some very special attention, and both Dorothea and I, remembering Roy’s parents, are honored to have a part in this effort. Roy brought some of his art and sculpture work clear from Bainbridge for a Seniors Kiwanis program in December. Roy is a very talented man, his art is from the soul.

Shirley will assist Clayne with the meeting agendas and any necessary correspondence on the convention. Billy Joe will be back to write checks, and Elaine has agreed to take care of the birthday, anniversary and Get Well cards.  Clayne, as president elect, will be taking the presiding role for four meetings. This is great practice for his term, which begins in October. With all that is happening at this time of year . . Berry sales, July picnic in Edmonds Park, Taste of Edmonds in August, and the PNW Convention at the same time; he is counting on full support from one and all.  I know he will get it!

Our Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis business cards are ready! Frank Suhara’s design was printed up by John Bruce of the Tillicum Snohomish Club, on Wally Walsh’s printer. Another example of Kiwanis helping Kiwanis. The committee working on our new brochure hopes to have it completed within the week. More Kiwanis helping each other. Don’t forget, the Tillicum Snohomish Club’s salmon barbecue on July 10th and 11th. 12:00 noon till 8:00 PM. Seniors and children under 14, pay $6.00. Teens and adults pay $8.00.

Don’t forget our members who are “under the weather”. Gordon Wilson has just transferred to another home for several weeks of intensive rehabilitation before moving on. The next  place has not yet been determined. Mike Medalia is making good strides in getting back on his feet, and we hope to get over to see him before we leave. Don Williams has recovered from his accident, thank goodness.  John Nutting, who retired from our Kiwanis Club (we hope temporarily) was in Washington D.C. for the dedication of the WWII memorial.

Please keep in mind the suggestion I presented last week, a meeting in which every member (ALL OF US) will bring a guest to a particular meeting, presenting one of our interesting and challenging programs, offering something a little special with the coffee.  We’ll show them that Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis is a great group of people who have a wonderfully rewarding time together and enjoys   serving the children of our community!.

Remember Let’s do more in ‘04!

ANYBODY OUT THERE CROCHET, KNIT OR HAVE YARN TO DONATE TO THOSE WHO DO? The Edmonds Seniors have a project making knit or crocheted stocking caps for new borns and also persons undergoing chemo. Also short shawls to go over the chemo patients shoulders. Most of the time there is just one or two people involved, more are needed. If you would like to learn some of these crafts, contact the Kiwanis of Edmonds Seniors. We meet at the South County Senior Center every Tuesday morning at 10AM. We can have a knitting bee! It takes such a small amount of work to make  a lot of difference  to a chemo person, as well as a new born. Please?

In this (June) issue of Tidal Tales, we are presenting the Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis "Business Card/Pocket Calendar". Designed by Frank Suhara, and adapted for printing by John Bruce of the Tillicum Snohomish Kiwanis Club, a copy is printed below. The reverse side has a 2004/2005 Calendar, beginning with July, 2004, and including to June, 2005. Use this card to introduce our Kiwanis Club to guests and/or potential members
