EDMONDS SR’S LAUNCHING BIKE HELMETS Howie Voit and his crew did a mighty task last Thursday and all 154 bike helmets are ready to be delivered to the five schools waiting for them. This will proceed in the next two weeks. There is a school official person at each location who will be trained to fit them properly through a Kiwanis supplied video to each school. Schools involved are three K-6 elementary: Chase Lake Elementary, Woodway Elementary, and Edmonds Elementary. Cedar Valley Elementary, a K-8 school, and Meadowdale Middle School are the other two. Family Resource Advocates at Chase Lake and Woodway Elementary schools are waiting anxiously to supply the helmets to their kids. Total cost for the helmets, which are white and have a Kiwanis Logo on one side, is $806.00 cash, plus $30.00 for the videos. $780 of this came from funds raised by the Kiwanis Sr’s for this project, and the remainder came from impromptu donations raised during club meetings to cover extra costs involved. The Kiwanis Sr’s Thursday work crew finished putting the Kiwanis Logo on one side of each helmet. Furnishing Bike helmets are an important part of the Kiwanis Young Children Priority One Safety Program, emphasizing injury prevention. |

Kiwanians Shirley Elliot and Gordy Wilson, attending the recent Meadowdale High Key Club meeting April 22nd, bring us this report. With new officers recently elected come some new ideas regarding Fund Raisers. The current plan being proposed. Are you ready for this? PIE THROWING! It is promoted as a “sure thing, loads of fun, and a crowd pleaser”. Plans are still being finalized, but it DOES involve teachers and other staff “volun-teering” as “live targets”….. With students lining up to pay for the pleasure of “pupils pitching pies at pedagogues”. Yes, it’s definitely Spring . . When a touch of “goofyness” is in the air! Your Kiwanis Club president, a former teacher, is very happy to have “been there-done that” sort of thing. Oh, what fun! President Alison and Key Clubbers . . . We admire your spirit! W hen asked about the Key Club convention attended by two Key Club members and their advisor the first part of April, their answer was “Lots of fun”. Hmm, given this turn of events, we are wondering what fun? May 13th is the next scheduled Key Club meeting. |

President’s Corner Spring in Edmonds this year has been glorious and the month of May promises even more. Let’s all take time to join our fellow Kiwanians at the Prayer Breakfast this Friday, May 7, at 7:AM. Sponsored by SnoKing Kiwanis, it is an annual event that welcomes our full support. We are so blessed with opportunities to serve our community. To balance your day Friday, the 7th, I suggest taking in the special “Mothers & Others” performance by the Trolley Days Band. This is a great group of musicians that offers a variety of music . . The concert is billed as “A Touch of Class”. It is at 7:30 PM (FREE) at the Church of God . . 8224 220th SW Edmonds. Our own ex-Kiwanian Jim Bloom is an active member of this group. Meadowdale Preschool is enjoying the reading assist things we bought for them. Pictures have been taken and shown at our meeting. Our bike helmet crew has been busy and under the direction of Howie Voit, they got all 154 helmets ready for distribution with the Kiwanis logo. This will take place during the next two weeks. Another go around with the Meadowdale High School graduating Seniors is scheduled for the end of this month. Interested Kiwanians can volunteer through the Volunteer Programs for Retirees and Seniors, Kimberly Barkhuf is a contact. Last, but definitely not least, the Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis BERRY SALE. Spread the word, we need to sell more this year to cover our increasing costs of services to our own community. Remember Let’s do more in ‘04! President Elwin

Gloria Scott to be Inducted into the WSMTA Hall of Fame in June. Nominated by her colleagues for her extraordinary service in contributing to the development and growth of music education in Washington State, Gloria is to be honored in on June 22, 2004, at a special ceremony during the annual State Conference Banquet at Western Washington University in Bellingham. Gloria has been teaching piano for 39 years, not only in Washington, but in Alaska, Montana, Hawaii, Canada, New York, Australia and Denmark. There simply isn’t room to cover all that Gloria has done, she has been a teacher’s teacher most of this time. Also a consultant and Western Division Coordinator for the International Piano Teaching Foundation on this side of the Mississippi River. She is a thirty year member of the Washington State Music Teachers Association. Gloria will be accompanied by her husband, Chuck Scott, and two daughters when she accepts her honor. Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis are very proud of Gloria. |

Written & Unwritten Rules about Programs. Always avoid speakers promoting a certain religion, one who is promoting parthy political issues, a person whose goal in talking to the club is to try and get them to contribute to their pet project. Speakers should be informed that they have from 10:30 to 11:00 to present their program so the president should keep the business portion of the meeting short enough to conclude at 10:30 sharp. Members should not try to continue past that time. Notify the guest that they are always welcome to stay over and talk to members who may have questions. A few suggestions to keep our meetings business like, to show that we are well organized and efficient. *Borrowed without permission from the Tillicum Tabloid. |

Election of Officers is Today Offices for consideration are President, President Elect, Vice President, Treasurer, and three board members. The out-going president is automatically on the Board for one year. Those selected are in charge of making decisions for the club membership, they will decide the direction of the club, the program, how your money is spent. Those not in the running should be willing to serve on whatever committee you feel you have an interest in. Everyone who is physically able should be involved in the operations of the club. These offices start in October of 2004. Four months from now. |
