Foundation Zone, or Zone Foundation I was mystified at the recent Kiwanis Zone meeting by the frequent referral to FOUNDATION(s). So, I looked it up in the dictionary, Websters New Collegiate, cc 1977. 25 years old, five definitions plus a few sub-definitions, i.e. corset. Changes are rapid lately, a newer dictionary, the Students Dictionary from the Tillicum Kiwanis club was handy. Aha, just 3 definitions (no corset). In 2003, the definitions were 1)base of a building; 2)principles of a program or agency; 3)a charitable institution. Numbers 2 & 3 seemed to be closest to those mentioned. Speakers were asking us to give privately to the Kiwanis Foundation, the PNW Foundation and the Canadian Foundation. It was also suggested the local clubs should include supporting the various Kiwanis foundations in the club budget — not sure if the suggestions indicated Administration budget or Service budget. Or both. Payments to the Kiwanis Foundation are a personal tax deduction. How that could be handled through the club budget wasn’t covered. I mean like, “who gets the credit?” We were also told money paid to the foundation “may” also be used in the various club’s area. At the discrimination of the Foundation, I would assume. But maybe if we begged enough . .? Sent a large delegation to the International Convention to wine and dine the Foundation principles? Member expense, of course. The Club’s budget covers only a portion of convention expenses. However, this was a beginning, and I determined it was not going to be the end. For more information, I turned to the monthly Kiwanis Magazine, published ten times a year, June/July and Nov./Dec. Wait a minute! Does June/July come out before or after the June 26th-29th International convention? Suggested amendments are due the end of April, too early to appear in the May issue, and if June/July is in July, the only amendments seen will be those that passed at the convention. Will the clubs be notified in time? Well, anyhow, the magazine was my best resource. I learned a lot, just from reading the masthead. All International Officers are from east of the Mississippi River. The pastpresident is from Manilla, PI. Fifteen Trustees are listed, only 1 from west of the Rockies, Chatsworth, CA. Two other trustees are from west of the Mississippi River, 1 from Denver, CO & 1 from New Orleans, LA. 6 are from foreign countries, 1 of these from Quebec. The remaining 6 are from Eastern states. No Trustees are from the PNW. The Editor of the Kiwanis magazine is also Executive Director of Kiwanis International and lives in Indianapolis. I found the Foundation information in January. I suggest you all read it. On page 55 they gave a “sampling” of Foundation Programs. Read them, too. Page 57 of the January Kiwanis, has the form to send in a “gift” to the International Foundation. Listed are additional funds covered by the Foundation. Some of them include objectives that don’t appear to go with our club. One is a Youth Opportunities Fund. This allows Key Club to award grants to support projects in Key Club communities, while funding scholarships for Key Club members. (Separates Key Club from their local sponsoring Kiwanis Club). There is also a World Wide Service Project which is to assist in eliminating iodine deficiency disorders. Also included in this list, many of which have not been listed previously, is the Kiwanis Foundation’s International Unrestricted account. This includes supporting administrative costs for various accounts, if I read it correctly, it doesn’t seem to stick to the club regulations. On this same page, there’s a photo of Christel DeHaan, receiver of last year’s World Service Medal from Kiwanis International and a $10,000 grant from the Kiwanis foundation. Her first Christel House was founded by her in Mexico City in 1998. It has now expanded to serve nearly 3,000 children in Mexico, India, Venezuela, South Africa, and . . . get this, Indianapolis, Indiana. Yes, the home of Kiwanis own Executive Officer and Kiwanis International Office, gave the only Christal House in the U.S. the $10,000.00 Grant for enhancing the lives of children. I’m sure it’s well deserved & just a coincidence it happens to be in the Kiwanis home port of Indianapolis. With all of this in mind, I am looking very closely into establishing a Tidal Tales Foundation. This will allow me to expand the bulletin to about five pages (ten sides) decrease the advertisers, they use up space I need for pictures of Kiwanians getting awards for doing good deeds! I can also publish in COLOR. Get administrative costs, join in competition, win a prize. Maybe the medal, give the $10,000 grant to the Sr. Center for a warm place to wait while waiting for the food surplus give away to open. |

New officers have been elected for the 2004-05 term. The Key Club administrative year runs from April to April, so the newly elected slate will assume office this month. Presiding will be Allison Stephens; Vice Pres. Angela Southard; Secretary Briea Wirte; Treasurer, Sheena Nguwin. The PNW Key Club convention is this coming weekend, April 2—4 in Seatac at the Doubletree Hotel. Three delegates from the Meadowdale High School will be attending, along with their faculty advisor, Ms. Elizabeth Petrus Key Club has been actively co-sponsoring a book drive under the direction of Mrs. Ireland, school librarian. Several hundred books have been gathered, plus a number of long overdue library books returned. The collected children’s books will be given to neighboring elementary schools and pre-schools. Way to Go, Key Clubbers!! |

President’s Corner Kiwanis Election: The election of a slate of Club officers to be installed in October for the coming year will take place this month (April). A nominating committee of past presidents Ray Olson, Jim Buchanan, Buck Weaver, and George Deardorff will offer a slate to fill positions of President elect for 05-06, Treasurer, and three board directors for the 04-06 term. From the President’s Desk: Frank Suhara’s idea of a Kiwanis perpetual calendar has been put into life by Ray Roe. A big THANKS to Ray for assisting in this project as a club fund raiser. Ray designed the project assembly workings and has gone ahead putting together a number of units. He has also donated most of the needed material. Club members will be asked to lend a hand in applying the finishing touches (numbers, lettering, Logos). This will be a real “hands on” effort! We will set a marketing plan as soon as we’re ready! Dorothea will be designing a pamphlet with word and pictures promoting Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis. We have been granted display space at the Senior Center and we hope to have another local location. Wally Walsh has agreed to lend his expertise with the printing. John Rutter has been working up a “wallet card” promoting Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis also. Great marketing ideas, folks! Zone meeting: The recent Zone meeting came and went. Seven divisions were represented from Snohomish County to just across the Canadian border. There was opportunity for some sharing that unfortunately did not occur. Considerable time and attention was given to the promotion of Kiwanis Foundations, at both the International and District level. These enterprises exist beyond our basic organization, and in many ways they detract from our individual club purposes. This concern was also voiced by others attending. Hopefully this can be addressed before next year’s Zone meeting so a more “Division based” and productive exchange can result. Berry sales: Advertising of our upcoming berry sales has taken a short set back with the unfortunate illness of Clayne Leitner, our “berry guru”. Spread the word, everyone that we have berry’s coming up and the order sheets will soon be available. June for strawberries, July for raspberries and August for blueberries. Remember Let’s do more in ‘04! President Elwin
