A NEW MEMBER

(Taken from a recent American Legion Newsletter but reworded to fit our Club, as result of discussion by members of the membership committee)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see you at the meetings, but you ne'er say 'hello',

You're so busy all the time, with the ones you already know.

 I sit among the people, I'm very lonesome, not shy.

I only want to be a friend, you see But you old members pass me by.

You have all asked me to join The Tillicum Kiwanis Club

And you talk of fellowship. You could just step across the room,

Why can't you nod, and say 'hello'  or stop, and shake my hand?

You could then go sit with your friends, now that I'd understand.

 I'll attend one more meeting, and here's the message I'd like to send,

to all old members, Please introduce yourself to me!

I only want to be your friend. Isn't that what Kiwanis teaches?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other clubs have a solution. I have promoted these in the past to deaf ears, but will give it a last try!  1. As members arrive they should shake hands with all members. 2. We might presume on Wally Walsh to make name tags, for all members + guests, Set up crew could place tags around the tables, A new place to sit each week. What a great way to get to know one another. LETS DISCUSS THIS, WE MIGHT EVEN GET TO LIKE THE IDEA! The Edmonds Seniors have been doing this for years and it has been a success.

SALMON BAR-B-QUE

YARD SALE-SILENT AUCTION

JULY 10th & 11th HILL PARK

At the April 19th Executive Board Meeting discussion was if we could effectively hold all three functions on the same dates at Hill Park. It became apparent that if this is undertaken we must have the "manpower" to handle the three functions. This boils down to this. First to work at the salmon bar-b-que in the food area you must have a valid health permit. Jack King must know how many will be working in this area. So it is imperative you let him know immediately who you are! Secondly, we must know who is willing to work the yard sale. A sign up sheet will be sent around soon for this. Third, Doris Wentworth needs to know who plans to assist her with the silent auction, Even if you have physical limitations there are some tasks you will be able to do. There will be signs to place around town, flyers to distribute, tickets to sell... A job for most everyone. LET'S GET BEHIND THIS AND MAKE IT A REAL SUCCESS. THE PROCEEDS MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR YOUR CLUB TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE VARIOUS PROGRAMS IN THE DISTRICT!  Suggestions from the membership are welcome so let's hear what you have to say. If you think holding all three is too much, say so. Your feedback is essential.

THANK YOU

WE KNOW:

It's not for money, it's not for fame,

It's not for any personal gain,

It's just for love of fellow man;

It's just to lend a helping hand.

It's that reward down in your heart;

It's feeling you have been a part of helping others far and near;

That makes YOU A SPECIAL VOLUNTEER!

DUES-DUES-DUES

It appears that the international convention will be voting on dues being paid once a year. In one respect, this makes good sense. It would cut down an the treasurers doing twice a year what they could be doing but once! On the other hand, some argue that if a member dies or quits the money would be nothing more than a donation. Most groups (i.e., VFW. Amer. Legion, Elks, Moose etc) do pay dues once a year, so it's not a new idea but one that Kiwanis has never adopted. The Tillicums should let Lt. Governor Rod Vroman know how they feel about this,

INTERCLUBBING

There are two interesting articles in the March/April Pacific Northwest Builder on interclubbing. One of special interest was relative to the Canada, U.S. Goodwill week, setting the last week in April for this to take place. It was disheartening to be informed that Abbotsford had opted for a "fun night” instead: For many years the Tillicums have complied with the Canada-U.S. week by attending two Chilliwack Clubs and Abbotsford. This year it will just be the Chilliwack Clubs. Next year?

SENIOR MEAL DEALS

One finds all sorts of coupons for seniors at various cafe's, and some are excellent. One of recent note is the Buffet at the Tulalip Casino. Lunch is normally $9.95 but on Tuesdays it's "senior day" and the Buffet lunch is but $6.95. The selection is excellent. i.e., salads, entree's and deserts. You don't have to gamble and the parking is a huge lot. Dinner time prices are over $16.00.

SHOW-STOPPER DUTCH BABY PANCAKE

For a 2 to 3 quart pan, use 1 / 4 cut butter or margarine, 3 eggs, and 3/4 cup of each milk and all purpose flour. Place butter in pan and set in a 425 degree oven. While butter melts, mix batter quickly. Put eggs in blender and whirl at high speed for 1 min.  With motor running, gradually pour in milk, then slowly add flour; continue whirling for 30 seconds. Remove pan from oven, pour in batter, and bake until puffy and well browned (20 to 25 minutes, depending on pan size.)

For 3 to 4 quart pan use 1/3 cup butter or margarine, 4 eggs, and 1 cup each of milk and all purpose flour.

Toppings:

Fresh fruit, hot fruit, canned pie filling, syrups, powdered sugar. Dust pancake with ground nutmeg, if you wish, and serve with your favorite topping.

This makes a quick and easy meal..

HUMOR TIME  (sorry Tony Bueler!)

An old man walks into a bar, sits down und starts sobbing.

The bartender asks, "What's wrong?" The old man looks at the bartender and says, " I married a beautiful woman two days ago. She's a natural blonde, 25, Intelligent, a marvelous cook, a meticulous housekeeper. And she's extremely sensitive to my wants and needs, very giving, my best friend, and very loving. "

The bartender stares at the old man for a brief moment and says, "But that sounds great! You have what everyman wants in a woman, so why are you crying?

The old man looks at the bartender and says, " I can't remember where I live!"

36TH ANNUAL KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

JUNE 26-29, 2004 IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

OTHER THAN KIWANIS. WHAT OTHER VOLUNTEER CONTRIBUTIONS ARE YOU MAKING - LOCAL COMMUNITY. CHURCH, ETC. (NOT FINANCIAL)?

Wouldn't it be interesting to spend one meeting going around the room having each member give a report on other contributions they are making over and above their involvement in Kiwanis? It doesn't necessarily have to be currently, but perhaps things previously involved in but given up because of retirement, age, medical. and physical problems. This would be another chance to get to know your fellow club member a little better. That shy members other activities may be real eye opener. If program Chair lacks a program this would be a great fill in.
