Club Highlights:
Lydia House 2007: As a result
of our annual auction, $8350 was donated by those attending to allow
Kiwanis to present this amount to this little known safe-haven for women
located in Snohomish.
Snohomish High School KEY Club: The Snohomish Kiwanis
sponsor a group of about 45 student KEY Clubbers at the local high
school. KEY stands for “Kiwanis Educating Youth”. Our purpose is to
provide leadership opportunities and promote the “ethic of community
service” among our youth. During the past year Kiwanis members
dedicated 185 hours and spent $1960 (neither figure included in previous
community service totals) in support of their activities. High School
student members support our projects and we support theirs as they work
to serve the community. Major community efforts on their part center on
assisting elderly, mentoring elementary students, and supporting the
needs of the homeless as well as assisting with high school projects.
Glacier Peak High School Key Club:
The Kiwanis Club of Snohomish proudly chartered a new Key Club at our
new high school this past Fall. Currently 30+ students are actively
involved in contributing to both their school and their community. As
the club grows so does the success of the impact they make in improving
the quality of life for many individuals and groups.
Young
Children Priority One: A major program of Kiwanis
International focusing on prenatal to age 6, our club has encouraged
members to be active in projects and activities that promote all
elements of child care and safety for this age group. Campaigns to
prevent “Shaken Baby Syndrome” and our constant support of infant needs
at the Community Food Bank are examples of this effort.
Boy’s
and Girl’s Club Security 2007: The Snohomish Kiwanis Club
cut a check for $6850 to the City of Snohomish to purchase security
cameras at Tillicum Park, Skateboard Park and the Boy’s and Girls Club
complex in downtown Snohomish. These were installed in 2008 and
currently monitor the previously mentioned facilities on a 24/7 basis.
Boy’s
and Girl’s Club Program Support: Kiwanis International has
encouraged local clubs to partner with local agencies that assist the
needs of young people. This has resulted in a stronger working
relationship between our local Boy’s and Girl’s Club, an organization we
have supported with time and financial assistance since its doors opened
five years ago. As a result of our most recent auction, $10,000 was
raised to assist the club in purchasing new equipment, technology and
provide for student scholarships.
Santa
Photo Project 2008: Pictures with Santa has been a fund
raiser for the past six years. This year’s efforts allowed the club to
donate $1940 to our local food bank for infant and youth needs and also
purchase over 50 winter coats for kids in need. Our thanks to John L.
Scott Realty, McDaniel’s Do-It Center, J C Penney’s, Fred Meyer and
Historic Downtown Snohomish for assisting us in this project.
