REPEAT

I could practically copy from the September Tidal Tales, just more of the same as Hurricane "Rita" is pounding away at what is left of the Gulf Coast. Then New Orleans was reflooded as it was almost getting dried out I don't think Pensacola got as much pounding with Rita as with Katrina, but all along the coast the beaches, causeways, bridges and roads are either blocked, out or flooded. We realize how lucky we are to be here. At least an earthquake doesn't go on and on. And Mt. St, Helens spreads ash around, but at least the mountain stays in the same place And ash all over everything is easier to clean up than dirty, contaminated water.

In an age where images of war, disease, and natural disaster are broadcast world wide, youngsters who merely see such things may endure an emotional impact -- right along with those directly affected. Scientists and mental health researchers are now recognizing that the developing minds of young children are far more vulnerable to trauma than once thought. 9t's obvious that a five-year-old child who loses parents to a flood, hurricane, auto accident or terrorist attack will face a jagged emotional future.

  KeyClubNews

With nearly 50 Meadowdale High students in attendance, Key Club met Thursday morning, Sept. 22nd, for the first time this school year. Club advisor, Mrs. Cano, explained to those present that Key Club President Briea will be unable to attend and preside at the 7:15 AM meetings this semester due to her enrollment in a special precollege program meeting during this early morning time. Vice President, Tomas, ably took the leadership role, outlining to the group some of what Key Club was about and what expectations might be.

Ms. Shirley Elliot, representing Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis, the sponsoring group for Key Club at Meadowdale, gave a brief outline of the Kiwanis role and how and when the two clubs cooperate in certain areas and projects of Community Service.

Key Club will be meeting the first and third Thursdays, at 7 AM in room 104. Officers for this year are: President, Briea; Vice President, Tomas; Secretary, Sarah; Treasurer, Mick; and Bulletin Editor, Frances. The Key Club officer term is from April to April, providing time both at the beginning and closing of the school year to cover all activities.

Again, we are all looking forward to a year of community involvement and fun from Key Club!

  President’s Corner

Just when you think you are done with a job, something comes up. This is the ex-president's message for October. I owed John a message since he did one for me during the year, so I am paying him back.

I must admit I have enjoyed the programs for September and don't mind writing if message when I have something nice to say. I liked listening to Nick and his talk regarding the Edmonds schools. He has a way with words just like the Edmonds Mayor. This was the second time I have listened to Gary Haakenson and still don't think he has gotten to his speech (or whatever you call it). He always starts with a question and answer session and runs out of time. I think we get more out of these question and answer sessions than we would from his canned talk. This also was the case for Mary Lou's Fire Department rep. I thought it was most enjoyable that the damn computer didn't work and we got to ask questions for the whole time. I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did and I think we got more out of his time with us than if he had run through a speech. Lastly, I liked the talk by the Chiropractor last Tuesday. They really feel that if they can get to these kids and their backpack problems early, they can save a lot of grief later.

Last, I would like to thank my wife, Sharon, for filling us in on the PNW conference YCPO seminar she attended in Vernon, BC last month.

Remember, as scary as it may be, the children are the future of the world!

        Clayne   (almost retired president)

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis plans to promote Disaster Preparedness during our upcoming annual Food Drive at Top Foods this November. World and National events these past months have caused communities everywhere to re-examine levels of disaster preparation. Our focus will be "Family Preparedness". We plan to distribute American Red Cross information (brochures) on "Building a Family Disaster Kit" while conducting our Food Drive.

A Sample Kit will be displayed, along with some prominent signs to bring attention to the need for being prepared. The kits are designed to provide essential items for a family for three days .... items included are water, food, first aid supplies, extra clothing, blankets, tools and sanitation supplies. The Red Cross brochures outline suggested items and secure methods of storage.

Contact was made with the Snohomish County Red Cross Chapter and Top Foods to facilitate this effort. Both are giving their support plus materials and heartily agree that preparedness is vital, that too often it is forgotten when catastrophic events are no longer front page news ... so we'll be getting the word out in November!

New Name on the Greeters List

We have a new greeter. We sure do, and if you haven't met him yet, be there for sure on October 25th, because that's the day

Dexter F. Miller will be on deck to shake your hand and welcome you to the meeting.

Dexter is a transfer from Fairmont, Minnesota, the Uptown Kiwanis Club. He and his lovely wife, Ruth, are newcomers and are living in Edmonds. They are here because they have kids (and I assume grand kids) living in the Washington - Oregon area.

Dexter joined Kiwanis in 1985. He is a retired minister. We all welcome Dexter and Ruth to Edmonds..
