Senior Kiwanis Faces loss of Income

With the sizable ($1500) loss of a portion of our annual income due to the projected closing of Gate 3 (the Gate we staffed) for the “Taste of Edmonds”. Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis are faced with a sizable loss of income that goes to financing our programs. The “Taste” has dropped in earned revenue recently and this was one method of curbing their expenses. In fact, this loss is catastrophic for our programs.  We’ll definitely need to increase our annual berry sales to help recoup this loss.  Get  busy guys and gals. We are now far below other clubs in our fund raising. The bike helmets and other projects are worthy causes!.

TV Stars . . . . . Right there . . . Live and in person!! Two of our very own . . .  on screen!!! In living color . .etc… well not exactly all that but a very nice piece relating to a project shared by Ray Olson at a recent meeting.   The TV story told of and showed the combined efforts of  local Boy Scouts and American Legion and VFW Clubs in fund raising toward sending WWII Veterans to Wash. DC over the Memorial Day Weekend to visit the recently dedicated WWII Veteran’s Memorial. . . and among those pictured were Kiwanians Buck Weaver and Ray Olson! [Channel 5, King TV.] Ray was one of those selected to go!  John Nutting, another of our Sr. Kwanis, was present at the dedication a few months earlier. John was very much moved by this new addition to our Capital campus and shared his experiences with us.

We are so proud to have these Veterans among us and honor those who have given their all.

  KeyClubNews

Key Club PNW District Convention was held in Portland, Ore. April 7-10. New PNW Key Club President, Katie Walther, is from Anchorage. Other Executive Officers are: Melissa Im, Secretary, Yan Fan, Treasurer, and Megan Young, Bulletin Editor. The Lt Gov for Div. 22/24  Key Clubs, Brian Cheung, was 1 of 5 Lt. Gov’s honored as “Outstanding” for 2004-05.

With Spring in full swing and Summer rapidly approaching, Key Club activity is drawing to a close for this school year.  Meadowdale High School Graduation is scheduled for June 19, the last day of school is June 22nd.

A “Year End” party is planned, particulars to be set at the June 2 meeting. Farewells and thankyous will be shared with the past year’s officers and a greeting extended to the new leadership.

Tentative plans have been mentioned for another Car Wash … at the location near Buzz Inn on Highway 99 … sometime in August.

It has been a busy and productive year for Key Club at Meadowdale.  With the 2005-06 Convention to be in Seattle, we hope for participation as it will be within budget for us.

Of interest is a new Key Leader training program, to replace all others including HOBY. The first one was at Camp Killoqua, located at Stanwood, WA. on April 15 - 17. The  second is at Milwaukie, Ore. Sept 30—Oct. 2. The Web address is www.key-leader.org.

Best wishes to our graduating Senior Key Club members from all of us at Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis.

  President’s Corner

Thoughts from a Pretender to the Crown

Good Ol' Clayne!  Clayne, he sezs to me "I'm gonna be out of town next Tuesday (last Tuesday), so you'll have to run the meeting."  Turns out the Annual Election of 0fficers and Board Members, the perfect opportunity for the president Elect to manipulate the election to put Clayne back in office for another year! And would you believe that this manipulative old judge ran right into a stonewall of Integrity! Nobody would help me get out of being elected as the New president. I think the job may be more of a challenge than I am up to. How am I going to run this club for a whole year if the membership is going to insist on doing everything by the book? And my situation is made more difficult because we managed in elect a now state of Officers and Board members of high character and principle! Good Grief!!

Departed Members

The Kiwanis Club of Edmonds Seniors lost another member in April. Charles (Chuck)Scott, a long time active  member of Kiwanis, died of pneumonia after surgery for throat cancer. Your editor was not in town for most of Apriland didn't learn of Chuck's death until the "abbreviated"  May Tidal Tales was published. Chuck was 85 year old.

Chuck was a positive member, and contributed much to our club. I especially remember how proud he was of his wife, Gloria, when she was awarded a special music honor for her teaching and piano expertise. Chuck was a grandfather to 31 children and even had numerous great grandchildren

Chuck died on April 11, and his funeral was on April 17. A delegation of Edmonds Seniors attended.

Another much valued and missed member, Steve Callender, died on February 3. Steve loved fishing and spent much time at Neah Bay. Steve was 82 ears old. Many Kiwanis members attended his funeral February 23rd.

MISCELLANEOUS NEWS

Election of Officers for 2005 - 2006 was held on May 24th. The following members will take office on October 1st, 2005:

President John Rutter; President Elect: Ben Snowdon; Vice President: Harold Huston. Board members: George Bardsley, Elwin Wright, John Nutting. Elwin Wright; who has been on the Board by virtue of being 2003-4 Past President will remain on the Board and Clayne Leitner will be on the Board by virtue of being 2004-05 Past President. All of this happens October, 2005.

Matty Martin has returned from Arizona and after several weeks of Washington's weather has been down with pneumonia. Matty was the member lust year's president, Elwin Wright, selected to be awarded the Capt. Smith award, which is always awarded by Smith's widow, Leona. Leona has also been ill, so Elwin will be attempting to coordinate this activity as soon as possible. At the same time, maybe us newer members can learn what this award is all about!

Speaking of newer members, Rita Miller and Jack Zapata must be about ready to "read their aprons".

We are glad to see Mike Medalia back to the meetings. He tells me he still needs to have more back surgery.

Shirley, Ray Roe, Elwin, George Bardsley and Dorothea from Edmonds Kiwanis attended the Meadowdale High School Sr. Evaluations Friday, May 27th.

Old Salt, Sez,

Need ways to get around no salt!  Can’t do without Popcorn!

A teaspoon of salt contains 2.3 grams of sodium. The American Heart Ass’n recommends we avoid anything having more than 350 mg sodium per serving & eating smaller portions of foods with 150 to 350 mg per serving.

Planting Time: We have been admiring the fixup job the garden club has been doing on the front parking lot of the Senior Center. Offering our “help” was encouraged as long as we followed the garden club’s rules. We put the Sr’s down to replace a stolen evergreen shrub, and are looking for some good, colorful ground cover.

The PNW Builder, which only comes every three months, has info & registration for the coming PNW convention, as well as key club and circle K club which have had their conventions.

Recent Interclubs

On May 5th, we had our long anticipated interclub with the Vancouver Kiwanis. Five hardy souls from Edmonds Kiwanis Seniors boarded the train at 8:15 .A.M. We Joined Kiwanis from several other clubs, Issaquah, Monroe, Mukilteo, Everett Seattle, and Bellingham in addition to our club. The Goodwill Luncheon 2005 was hosted by the Kiwanis club of Vancouver, BC. in the Vancouver Club Ballroom. About a hundred or so Canadian Kiwanis club members also attended, there are at least 9 clubs in the general vicinity. The weather was good, and the train was late, we didn't eat until after 1:30 PM. Track work near Bellingham. After the meeting we were free to walk around the very beautiful city of Vancouver. Transportation was provided from the train and back to the train. We left Vancouver about 6:PM, and arrived in Edmonds about 9:30 PM. Dinner was available on the train.
