Edmonds Food Bank gets big boost from

Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis Food Drive.

Under the able direction of Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis Food Bank Chairman, Al Rutledge, we maintained  a total of  68 1/2 “man” hours at two stations in the front entrance of the Top Foods and Drugs store on the N/W corner of 220th and Aurora over the three days of November 19, 20, and 21.  In addition to  Al’s 20 hours, 17 senior members worked from one hour to 5 hours and 8 Key Club members worked 18 1/2 hours. The estimated food value from the approximately 40 plus full to overflowing grocery carts was  $13,394.00. This includes $769.00 in cash and checks.

Al was at the store every morning before  9 AM. He put out the carts and the new signs he had made, several for each station. He also set out information material, cans for the cash donations, receipt slips for those who had made particularly large grocery donations.  (While I was there several ladies brought completely full carts of groceries to donate.)  I was told about two people who drove up, opened their trunks and had the “workers” unload several carts full of misc. supplies, one bought from Costco.  None of these donations were fresh meat, bakery or dairy products or salad type fresh vegetables. Potatoes, squash and carrots and other root vegetables were eagerly accepted.  Packages food such as crackers were also welcome, and standard cookies—not soft cookies, were types that worked best. Tuna fish and other canned fish and meats are accepted. Packaged foods such as breakfast cereal, muffin mix, cake mix, jello. Even scalloped potato mix.  I saw bags of pancake mix and flour and sugar, brown and white peeking out of some bags. There were new Satsuma oranges in the store, too, and one of the Key Club girls told me a patron bought several boxes to put into the carts.  Bags of apples were donated, and medium size jars of  peanut butter. Cans of soup, dried lentils, dried beans and onions for soup and baked beans.   I saw a super size box of powdered milk sticking out of a bag .  Baby food was a welcome addition, as well as canned milk.

Then, at 6 PM each day,  Al waited for the trucks from the Food Bank to arrive so he could  load the contents of at least 20 carts, each with more than 15 bags of groceries, into the trucks.  For three days he did this. I think he must have put in a lot more than  hours, maybe twice as much.  And he was there to take over if anyone was late arriving, so the Kiwanis member serving a shift could leave at the scheduled  time.

We have 31 members in our club.  18 signed up to work. Some have health problems.  However  six or seven could have put in at least one hour.

  KeyClubNews

Key Club members were active in the recent pre-Thanksgiving food drive at Top Foods in Edmonds. Like Kiwanis, service to the community is a vital part of being a Key Club member and eight members came out, giving a combined effort of almost nineteen hours of service over the November 19, 20, 21 weekend. The collected food and funds all go to the Edmonds Community Food Bank and Key Club helped to make this year’s drive one of the most successful!

We Kiwanians truly appreciate the help and those Key members that gave of their time will be recognized and honored later this month. We want to be certain we have included each that pitched in and that we have accurate name spellings!  Again, a big THANK YOU Key folks!  We’ll see you at your Dec. 2 meeting.

Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis is trying to arrange to have an Interclub at the Key Club meeting  on the 16th of December.  This will be quite an effort for us “retirees” as Key Club meets at 7:AM, and just  serves snacks, not breakfast. It may be possible to arrange for coffee, we’ll see if we can arrange it when we advisors are at the Dec. 2 meeting.  They are a busy bunch of kids and we would like to have others of the Edmonds Seniors see them at “work”.

Winter Break is December 20-31 (Districtwide) so right now things are pretty busy at Meadowdale,. . ..  Lots of activities, performances, plus some exams!   Let’s not forget to slow down and truly have a “Happy Holiday”!

  President’s Corner

Well, by now everyone should be done with Thanksgiving with only turkey sandwiches left to finish. I hope you all had an enjoyable time.

I would like to thank Elwin’s group of Jim, Elaine and Richard for putting on an excellent month of programs.  I especially liked the one on identity theft. I am planning to get one of those crosscut shredders, or at least ask Santa for one for Christmas.  I also enjoyed the K-9 officers, Shane and Rocky, we had on November 23.

I would like to thank Al for a successful food drive in November.  I liked Elwin’s idea of inviting the Key Club members who participated in the drive to join us for our breakfast meeting on December 21.  Remember, we are not done yet. The spring food drive is still coming up.

I encourage each of you (including me) who have not yet given at least one name to our membership committee to do so. I am sure you know one person who could be contacted by our membership group. If you enjoy these Tuesday morning meetings, they probably would also. Remember, you do not have to do the contacting.

  Happy Holiday’s

November Programs Appealed to All

There was a stimulating variety of November programs. First was the Director of the Snohomish County Ombudsman’s program. It was extremely interesting.

Then an Assistant Principal of Meadowdale High School, Christine Travits, gave a program covering the advances and not so advancements in today’s high schools. As most of us have seen at least one generation through high school and are now in the middle of the second generation, we found this  very interesting.

The third program was Ms. Robin Heslop from Edmonds Crime Prevention Unit. She covered identity theft. Her audience was spellbound listening to all the  awful things that can happen. Number 1, do not, and I repeat, DO NOT, carry any of your credit cards in your purse.  Or your Social Security Card, or give any card information on the phone.  Number 2, One we hadn’t thought of was in paying your bills by check, don’t mail them in your home box, take bills with checks and credit card numbers to the post office or a big mailbox somewhere. Number 3. It is smart to use a shredder, but make sure it is a cross-cut shredder.

Officer Shane Hawley and his guard dog, Rocky, came to see us on the 23rd of November. Rocky made a big hit with all of the Kiwanis Seniors . At 85 pounds he is about 20 months old and has had about six months of  specialized training in his field, which is chasing a running man.   He can smell a fleeing man up to one hour after he has passed. Totally charming dog. He has his own quarters in Shane's car where much of time is spent on patrol.

Convention awards, Information was in the Sept. Oct. Builder, sent in November, 2004.

Absent Members

Gordy Wilson still hasn’t made it to a meeting,  He wrote that he was thinking of us.

George Deardorff  has made it to almost all of our meetings now; he also worked the Food Bank—and does telephone calling!

Steve Callender was ill but was able to attend  our 23rd meeting. Paul Jacobson was also ill.    He was able to bring his wife, Carole, to our lunch at Arnie’s with Rocky’s handler, Shane Hawley. I hope we see Carole at more lunches and other Kiwanis socials.

George Frankovich has returned to his sign-in post.

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know “why” I look this way. I’ve traveled a long way and some of the roads weren’t paved.  Will Rogers

Our Edmonds Senior  Kiwanis Club started a membership campaign several months  ago. We distributed  name sheets that members can write “suggested candidates” on to join our club. The committee would review the sheets,  and contact  the suggested persons, inviting them to a special  meeting  planned for January, 2005. All our members had to do was list  names, phone numbers and addresses, the committee would do the rest. Our District Governor, Dick Mayer, coincidentally, started  the “Green & Growing” campaign. Each member who sponsors a new member will receive a pin.  In 2003—2004 it was a Growth Award, not sure if this year’s will be the same or a special watering can pin Dick mentioned when he visited our club in September. It is to be called “watering for Growth”. This is to remind us that we need to work with and nurture new members so that they “Grow in Kiwanis”  The response has not been very good.  Don’t  you people enjoy our club, the companionship, programs, cookies? If we had more members, it would spread the volunteers around, too.  Think about it!
