Kiwanis International: Serving the Children of the World
Kiwanis International is a thriving organization of service-minded men and women who respond to the unique needs of their communities and address worldwide issues by “Serving the Children of the World.”

Founded in Detroit, Michigan, USA, in 1915 by a group of businessmen, Kiwanis International is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Today, the entire Kiwanis family has more than 600,000 members in more than 13,000 clubs. Kiwanis clubs serve in 96 countries around the world and achieve what individuals cannot do alone

The Name:
The name Kiwanis stems from a North American Indian phrase, which, like many aboriginal terms, had a variety of meanings, including; “We have a good time,” “We make a noise,” or “We trade.”

This is Marysville Kiwanis Club - now 52 years old!
Since founded in 1956, the Marysville Kiwanis Club has provided charitable service to Marysville focusing on promoting family values, supporting the community and youth services. The following is the story of our founding:

It was Thursday November 1, 1956 that the Marysville Globe published the good news – The Marysville Kiwanis Club had elected its first president – Mr. Norman W. (Norm) McConnaughey and had inducted an initial membership of approximately 31 local businessmen (women were allowed to join the 1980s). Other charter club officers included: Charles A. (Chuck) Hammond M.D., Vice President Leon L. Stock, Secretary R. “Whitey” Lundstedt, Treasurer Robert H. Thornberry, Board of Directors Member Ernest T. Vigil, Board of Directors Member David W. Coffey, Board of Directors Member Ray Treichel, Board of Directors Member William A. Gissberg, Board of Directors Member, Program Chairman Rev. Dennis L. Anderson, Board of Directors Member Elroy P. Olson, Board of Directors Member Stanley Shaefer, Assistant Program Chairman Harold Chapman, Assistant Program Chairman Jack Barney, Assistant Program Chairman Ray Treichel, Public Relations Chairman Additional charter members included: Clen Berglund Lloyd W. Fowler Kenneth O. (Ken) Barnes, M.D. Ed C. Spencer Rev. Howard P. Buck Paul N. Howell E.W. (Waldy) Byers George R. Gablehouse Con (Bud) Solvberg, Jr. G. A. (Jerry) Dudley Arthur J. (Art) Jensen Leverne R. (Vern) Sackmann Roger A (Rog) Nelson Ray Chambers Conrad B. Olsen Harold J. Chapman John H. Hulvey George B. Moll (Doc), DDS Jack Fox The 31 new members reflected a representative cross-section of the community including four educators, four medical professionals, two ministers, 3 auto sales and repair businessmen, 8 retail sales businessmen (grocery, variety, furniture, appliances), three farmers/dairymen, and one each: postmaster, attorney, newspaperman, insurance agent, plumber, mortician and real estate agent. Some charter members family names are still familiar in Marysville – Shaefer, Gissberg, Anderson for example. The Charter sponsor organizations were the Everett Kiwanis Club (Harold Emery, President, Vince Martinis, President Elect) and Monroe Kiwanis Club (Clarence Devers and Percy Dyer, District Governor) and was attended by the Kiwanis International field representative Darwin Smith from Chicago. On Monday November 12, 1956 the newly-formed Marysville Kiwanis Club met at The B&M where Dolores Searles (high school staff) entertained with very lively accordion selections. On the evening of Tuesday December 11, 1956 approximately 250 guests attended the event where the Marysville Kiwanis Club received its charter at the Everett Elks Club. In attendance were sponsoring organizations of Everett and Monroe as well as “visiting dignitaries from most of the clubs in the northwest.” On October 13, 1966, Ray Harding was elected to head the Marysville Kiwanis. Ray was the Principal of the Marysville Junior High School at the time. Other officers included; George Gustke, Vice President and James Lovejoy as Treasurer. Members of the Board of Directors included; Roy Millar, Richard Minnich, Frank Gadwa, Edward Wagner, Raymond Day, Edward Davis and Orville Christoferson. On November 18, 2006 we celebrated our 50-year Golden Anniversary at the Ken Baxter Senior Center with Kiwanis dignitary Rich Jensen in attendance. Ray Harding was presented the Legion of Honor Award.
